Every Veo prompt that consistently produces a usable take shares the same shape. We map it onto a seven-part framework: S-A-C-L-L-E-M (Subject, Action, Camera, Lens, Light, Environment, Motion physics). The order matters — Veo weights the earliest tokens hardest, and motion physics goes last so it overrides any motion implied earlier.

Open with a concrete subject: "a 30-year-old barista in a charcoal apron," not "a person making coffee." Specific subjects render specific frames; abstract subjects render stock-clip defaults.

Action

Name a single action: "pulls an espresso shot," "steps off a yellow taxi," "unrolls a paper map." One clean verb beats three vague gerunds.

Camera move

State the move explicitly: "slow dolly-in," "locked-off wide," "handheld over-the-shoulder follow." Veo defaults to gentle drift if you don't ask, which often spoils otherwise usable takes.

Lens

Name the lens and depth of field. "35mm at f/2," "85mm shallow," "anamorphic wide with subtle distortion." Lens language anchors Veo's visual vocabulary in cinema, not in stock.

Specify direction, quality and color temperature: "warm golden-hour key from camera-left," "hard top sun, deep contact shadows," "soft north-window light."

Why it works: Subject and action are locked, the camera move is named (slow 5-second dolly-in), the lens and light are specific, and the closing motion clause stops Veo from drifting into floaty drone-style movement. Steam is described as "natural" so Veo doesn't over-render it.

Character beat with handheld camera

A {tired night-shift nurse in pale blue scrubs} steps out of a hospital side door at 5:47 a.m., pauses, exhales a small breath of fog, and looks up at the brightening sky. Handheld over-the-shoulder follow that settles into a static medium as she stops. 35mm at f/2, soft cool overcast light, faint distant city sounds implied. Motion: natural, restrained, no fast pans, no zoom.
Why it works: One subject, one action sequence in three beats, and a specific camera path (handheld follow → settle into static). The closing "no fast pans, no zoom" line is critical — without it Veo often adds an unwanted final push.

Product motion for social ad

Four habits that lift the quality of every prompt you write.

Always name the camera move

Veo's default is a gentle drift. If you want a locked-off shot, say "locked-off." If you want a dolly, name the direction and speed. Implicit motion almost always reads wrong.

End on motion physics

Veo respects the last instruction most. Closing with "natural physics, no shake" or "slow-motion fluid" overrides any incidental motion implied earlier in the prompt.

Keep clips short and re-roll

Veo holds quality best in the 5–8 second range for tight motion. Going long invites drift. Shorter clips, more re-rolls is the correct workflow.

Use an image reference when consistency matters
